One-Day workshop “Women in Geomorphology: a Mediterranean perspective”

Within the framework of its activities, the Hellenic Committee for Geomorphology and Environment of the Geological Society of Greece in collaboration with the Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment -National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Department of Geography-GHES - University of Paris, the Department of Science and Technology - University of Naples Parthenope, the Department of Earth and Geoenvironmental sciences - University of Bari Aldo Moro, the Institute for Earth Observation -Eurac Research and the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies -University of Haifa organized the online one-day workshop entitled “Women in Geomorphology: a Mediterranean perspective”.

The event took place online on March 8, 2021, under the auspices of the International Association of Geomorphologists.

The main aim of this scientific event was to honor women geomorphologists in the Mediterranean and give them the opportunity to present their research results and establish a discussion and collaboration among them.

The workshop was addressed to geoscientists (members of the scientific community, academics and researchers, public administration and local government officials, etc.), active in any of the topics of geomorphology.

17 invited speakers, amongst which many early career researchers, from Greece, Italy, Spain, France, Malta, Egypt, Israel, Norway and Croatia, presented their research, covering a wide range of topics in geomorphology: coastal and submarine geomorphology, fluvial geomorphology, karst geomorphology, tectonic geomorphology - morphotectonics, glacial geomorphology, applied geomorphology, new techniques and methods for geomorphological mapping, geoarchaeology, palaeogeography and paleoenvironmental reconstruction, Quaternary geology and natural hazards and disasters.

The event was closed with a round table moderated by Prof. Mauro Soldati, where fruitful discussion was raised on various topics such as the ways to strengthen geomorphology and its future, the role of women in Mediterranean geomorphology, the importance of communicating and sharing scientific results using social media and new methodologies and approaches in geomorphology.
