Greek Geomorphologist Prof. Efthimios Karymbalis Takes Office as Vice-President of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG)

 

The Hellenic Committee for Geomorphology and Environment of the Geological Society of Greece (GSG) is pleased to announce that Professor Efthimios Karymbalis has officially assumed his duties as Vice-President of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG).

Professor E. Karymbalis, a distinguished Greek geomorphologist with a long-standing and acclaimed career in the international scientific community, currently serves as Secretary of the Hellenic Committee for Geomorphology and Environment, the official National Scientific Member of IAG, having also served as its President in the past.

His election to the position of Vice-President took place during the IAG Council meeting on February 5, 2026. Professor E. Karymbalis is one of three Vice-Presidents on the new IAG Executive Committee, alongside Jasper Knight (South Africa) and Takashi Oguchi (Japan). Mihai Micu (Romania) was elected President, while Anita Bernatek-Jakiel (Poland) assumed the role of Secretary General. The composition of the new Executive Committee is completed by 6 Co-opted Members and 4 Special Portfolio Members.

The new Executive Committee officially assumed its duties on September 1, 2026, for a term lasting through 2030, marking the beginning of a new governance period for the IAG.

The election of a Greek scientist to such a key position within an international scientific body represents a great honor for the domestic geomorphological community, while confirming and reinforcing its dynamic presence and global recognition.
